The Best Coffee Stops in Oaxaca City

Anywhere we travel, there's one non-negotiable: our morning coffee ritual. We have to start the day with a good coffee, sometimes brewing one in our Airbnb (if it’s well-equipped) or popping down the street to a local café. We love the smell of fresh coffee beans and getting that caffeine kick to jumpstart the morning.

If you’re like us and love speciality coffee, we’ve got you covered. Oaxaca has a fantastic coffee scene. The prices might remind you of those in a London café, but we’re not complaining. The quality absolutely matches the price.

The colourful facades of Oaxaca’s buildings are beautiful yet deceiving. You often find yourself wondering what lies beyond. Is it a restaurant, a shop, a hotel, or a clothing store? It’s always worth wandering into Oaxaca's stores as you never know what you’ll discover inside or out back—from baristas hidden at the rear of a homeware store to beautiful terraces behind double doors. Here are some of our favourite coffee spots in Oaxaca City:

  • Bodaega

  • Pan Con Madre

  • LIA Café

  • La Atoleria

  • Casa Blasón

  • Terno

  • Marito & Moglie Café

  • Muss Café

  • Boulenc Pan y Café

Bodaega

With a striking blue exterior on a quiet street, this bakery nails both coffee and pastries. It’s the perfect place to start your morning. The shop has one long shared table for enjoying those flaky bites, so don’t expect lots of seating. We love that you can see the bakers in action from the table/ counter.

Pan Con Madre

Come for the coffee, stay for the pastries at this artisan bakery. They also offer breakfast and lunch, and there’s a lovely outdoor terrace hidden out back.

LIA Café

Located inside a homeware shop, LIA Café is great for grabbing a coffee to go while you explore the streets of Oaxaca City. But don’t be surprised if you’re tempted by the charming home goods in this shop.

La Atoleria

Okay, this isn’t a coffee shop, but it serves Atole (it’s in the name), a traditional hot masa-based drink from Mexico. Imagine hot chocolate meets porridge—it’s rich, comforting, and comes in different flavours like vanilla and cinnamon. The setting is beautiful, and La Atoleria only use native corn and authentic cocoa from different parts of Oaxaca.

La Atoleria is also featured in Michelin 2024 under the name Tierra de Sol.

Casa Blasón

Established in 1874 by the Blasón family, this spot offers not only a coffee shop but also high-quality coffee beans from three locations in Oaxaca City and other stores across Mexico.

Other Cafés on our Shortlist:

Despite visiting Oaxaca three times over six weeks, we couldn’t try everywhere we had researched. Here are some of the other cafés we shortlisted. Although we didn’t get to taste their offerings, we liked their vibe and enjoyed looking around.

  • Terno - ‘Space for Good Coffee’ (9 AM - 2 PM) - Instagram

  • Marito & Moglie Café - A small roastery and café in the heart of Oaxaca City. Enjoy their coffee on the patio along with pastries or a breakfast menu. Instagram

  • Muss Café - Offers coffee, light breakfast, and mezcal or cocktails in the afternoon. Instagram

  • Boulenc Pan y Café - Artisanal bakery. Instagram

Oaxaca City’s coffee scene is vibrant and full of hidden gems, offering everything from artisan bakeries to cosy homeware shops with top-notch baristas. Whether you’re after a quick caffeine fix, a sweet treat, or a leisurely breakfast in a beautiful courtyard, there’s something for every coffee lover here.
