The best beaches in Milos

Nestled within the embrace of the Aegean Sea, Milos is a palette of vibrant landscapes, a legacy of its volcanic origin. While every corner of this Greek island whispers tales of beauty and charm, its beaches are particularly captivating. If you’ve got your own ATV, you only need to drive around for 10 minutes to find amazing sandy stretches with beautiful views all around the island. Below we’ll go over some of our favourite beaches along side others that we’ve been recommended but never go to go to.

Beaches we went to and loved: Sarakiniko, Fyriaplaka, Tsigrado and Papikinou

Sarakiniko Beach: The Lunar Landscape

Perhaps the most 'Insta-famous' of all beaches in Milos, Sarakiniko is a visual delight. Its otherworldly white rocks juxtapose beautifully against the blue sea, offering the illusion of walking on the moon. That’s why you will see plenty of models, influencers and honeymooners getting professional photoshoots done here.

Despite the hype and potential to be disappointed, we loved Sarakiniko, it truly is unique and beautiful. It gets busy in the day but there is still plenty of space to sunbathe on the rocks and you’ll definitely make some friends at the cliff jumping arch.

• Arrive early for some quiet and perfect lighting (sunrise is great here)

• If you want to cliff jump from the famous arch, make sure you check the weather (windy.com) for the wind forecast. The sea can get quite rough so swimming back to shore can become difficult.

• Sarakiniko is more rock than sand. Hence, prepare for a relaxing cliff-side chill. (There is a small sandy part to the beach but it is tiny).

• Don't forget to pack some water and snacks, there are no vendors on the cliffs.

Tsigrado Beach: The Adventurous Descent

The charm of Tsigrado lies in its secluded setting. The beach is small but not too busy because the only way to get to it is by taking a rather sketchy ladder and rope down. Flip flops aren’t ideal but as long you have some basic fitness and wit you should be fine!

There can be a queue getting up and down the ladder so make sure you leave enough time when arriving or leaving for your turn.

For the photographers, the illuminated caves over to the left (as you look out to the sea) of the beach in the afternoon are beautiful for some portrait photography, the setting sun bounces off the water illuminating the caves with golden soft lighting.

There are no vendors on this beach so bring your supplies with you.

Fyriaplaka Beach: The Colorful Retreat

Fyriaplaka is a more expansive beach with a soft sandy floor and plenty of space for sunbathing and swimming with a lifeguard on duty and water sports available.

There is also a beach hut that offers drinks foods and sun beds/umbrellas.

Fyriaplaka and Tsigrado beaches are within 10 minutes of each other so you can do both of them back to back.

Papikinou Beach

Papikinou beach is a long stretch of tree lined sandy beach near Adamas offering dual delights of sunsets and mountain views. We came here in the evening during sunset whilst we waited for a table at our favourite restaurant O Hamos who have a small beach bar set up on the beach.

Firipodomos Beach

Firipodomos is a secluded gem often overlooked by many tourists. Nestled among the unique rock formations, it was traditionally a fishing village. Due to its remoteness, it has retained an authentic charm and offers a tranquil environment for visitors. The turquoise waters and rocky backdrop provide a picturesque setting.

Plathenia Beach

Plathenia is renowned for its sandy shores and unobstructed views of the sunset, which appears to melt into the water at the horizon. Its serene ambiance makes it an ideal spot for sunset admirers. Locals often visit this beach to take in the spectacular sunset views away from the more crowded spots such as Plaka Castle.

Paleochori Beach

Often hailed as one of Milos' most stunning beaches, Paleochori is distinguished by its colorful rocks resulting from volcanic activity. The sand is warm due to underground hot springs, and the waters are crystal clear. The beach is segmented by rock formations, with each section offering a different experience.

Papafragas Beach

Papafragas is iconic for its narrow cove and unique swimming area surrounded by tall, smooth cliffs. The sea here has carved out natural arches and tunnels, making it a perfect spot for exploratory swims. The turquoise waters contrast beautifully with the white and gray cliffs.

Agia Kiriaki

Situated on the south coast, Agia Kiriaki is a long sandy beach known for its clean waters and relaxed vibe. The beach isn't as frequented as some of the more popular ones, giving visitors plenty of space. It’s a great place for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the natural beauty of Milos.
